Solution:

Perimeter is the sum of each of the lengths of a shape.

Rectangle has two equal lengths and two equal widths.

Let

w=

width of the rectangle.

Perimeter

=2 \times 7\,\text{cm}+2 \times w

But perimeter

=24\,\text{cm}

24\,\text{cm}=14\,\text{cm}+2w

24\,\text{cm}-14\,\text{cm}=2w

10\,\text{cm}=2w

Divide both sides of the equation by 2

w=\;\frac{10\,\text{cm}}{2}=5\,\text{cm}
