Let

Sum of the numbers

=14+16+x

Sum of the numbers

=30+x

Number of numbers

=3

Mean

=\;\frac{30+x}{3}

But mean

=12

12=\;\frac{30+x}{3}

Get rid of the fraction by multiplying both sides of the equation by the denominator 3

\;12 \times 3=30+x

\;36=30+x

\;36-30=x

\;6=x
