Solution:

Let the number added to the fraction $\;\frac{1}{8}$ be y

So, $\;\frac{1 + y}{8 + y}$ = $\;\frac{1}{2}$

cross multiply

8 + y = 2 + 2y

2y - y = 8 - 2

y = 6.
